Message from the new Family Leadership Coordinator for District 15
November 8, 2024
Dear District 15 Families,
I am excited to step into the role of Family Leadership Coordinator for District 15. As a proud product of NYC public schools, having attended PS 1 for elementary school and MS 51 for middle school, my own journey is a testament to the transformative power of strong schools, quality instruction, and meaningful family partnerships in shaping the futures of young people.
My passion for education led me to focus on Early Childhood Education in college, which inspired me to begin my career as a paraprofessional. After spending eight years working closely with students and families, I had the privilege of transitioning into the role of Parent Coordinator at PS 1, where I’ve served for the past six years. In this role, I had the opportunity to mentor colleagues and lead professional development across the district, sharing best practices to support student and family success. I look forward to continuing this work with my colleagues to build capacity and create lasting impact.
My dedication to education and family engagement is deeply rooted in the example set by my mother, who, as the mother of five children in District 15 schools, volunteered and got involved whenever possible. Her active participation made a significant difference in how she was able to support us at home and in school.
As the Family Leadership Coordinator, my goal is to empower, engage and create a supportive environment to ensure all families within the district feel like true partners in their children’s education. This includes providing learning opportunities, encouraging families to be active participants in decision making processes and creating spaces where families can feel heard and included. I am passionate about continuing to expand the ways we engage all families within all schools across the district. I look forward to working alongside all of you and meeting everyone at the next CEC meeting on November 19th.
Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.
In partnership,
Michelle Ortiz
