  • Middle School Admissions

    Dear families,

Applying to middle school this winter? The application isn’t open yet, but you can start getting ready now to apply later.

    What You Can Do Now

    • Explore middle school options.
      • Use the Middle School Directory (weblink) to find detailed information about schools of interest; you can also search for schools by course offerings, location, sports, accessibility, and more. A few tips:
        • Most middle school programs have specific requirements about who can apply to them. Later this fall, when you get your welcome letter and log in to MySchools, you’ll be able to see all the programs you’re eligible to apply to in a personalized search. For now, you can check a program’s Eligibility Requirements to learn if your child can apply to it.
        • Find out which school district you live in for middle school admissions and if you have any zoned schools on the Find A School (weblink) page of the DOE website.. Your child will have priority to attend their zoned middle school(s).
      • Make a list of schools that interest you and meet your child’s needs.
      • Visit these schools’ websites to learn more. Each MySchools directory page features a link to the school’s own website and contact information. You can also reach out to schools directly with questions.
      • Attend virtual or in-person open houses. Many schools’ directory pages also provide direct links to information for prospective families, such as open house information or virtual tours. Touring a school virtually or in person is a great way to imagine what it might be like to go there. When attending events, we recommend bringing a list of questions to ask school staff.
    • Get to know your child’s current school counselor. They will be your best guide through middle school admissions this year.
    • Learn more about middle school admissions. Pick up a copy of the 2022 NYC Public Schools Admissions Guide at your current school or download an accessible copy in your language from the Middle School (weblink) Enrollment page on the DOE website. Our website is also where you can find all the latest information and watch our admissions video playlist.

    What’s Next

Later this fall, 5th grade public school families will receive a personalized welcome letter in the mail. This letter will include a unique code to create a MySchools account or add your child to an existing one. When letters are available, all applicants will be able to request a copy from your child’s current school or a Family Welcome Center (weblink).

We’ll let you know when letters are on the way!

Best wishes,  The Middle School Admissions Team, Office of Student Enrollment

  • Free and Low-Cost Internet Options

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched a short-term Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) program, which provides broadband internet service for eligible New York City households, at a reduced cost, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

All families with a student enrolled in a DOE school or program are eligible for this benefit. Families can confirm their eligibility, apply for the program, and find participating broadband providers via the USAC website (weblink). There are two types of benefits available to eligible households:

    • Monthly Benefit: A discount of up to $50/month for broadband service, equipment, and device rentals; or
    • One-time Device Discount: A one-time discount of up to $100 for a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer (with a co-payment of $10 - $50), where available.

For questions and support, schools and families should email EBBHelp@usac.org (email) or call (833) 511-0311.

  • School Year 2021-22 Safe and Healthy Learning for All

Fall 2021 marks an important homecoming for our schools. On September 13, we begin the journey to recovery by welcoming New York City students back to school communities and classrooms where they can feel safe and well-cared for, and where they can learn and grow socially, emotionally, and academically.

Our return to full-time, in-person learning starts with a safe and healthy learning environment for every student and staff member and ensuring students have the tools and support they need to succeed.

    Don't forget to:

    1. Get your children vaccinated if they are aged 12 and older
    2. Submit consent for COVID-19 testing
    3. Use the Health Screening Application (weblink) for a daily health check in for your student.
