Cell Phone Policy

Our Policy

MODEL SCHOOL-BASED POLICY OF P.S. 001 FOR USE OF CELL PHONES, COMPUTING DEVICES, AND PORTABLE MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY. Cell phones may be used as set forth below consistent with Chancellor's Regulation A-413

 

During the school day (8:00 - 2:40):

All electronic devices (e.g.cell phones) may not be turned on or used on school property including school yard, lunchroom, and hallways, excluding the designated areas indicated below, unless instructed by school personnel.

All electronic devices (e.g.cell phones) may not be turned on or used during instructional time, including Fabulous Fridays, except for instructional and educational purposes with the explicit approval of the teacher. This includes parent use of cell phones during classroom visits.

All electronic devices (e.g.cell phones) may be used during the following non-instructional times of the school day (arrival or dismissal) in the event of an emergency: in the following designated areas: guidance office, main office or in the classroom with approval of school personnel.

All electronic devices (e.g.cell phones) are not allowed in the restrooms.

Cell phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during school trips (by students or parent chaperones), fire drills or other emergency preparedness exercises, unless instructed by school personnel.

Cell phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during the administration of any school, quiz test or examination.

 

During after-school, school sponsored programs or activities:

*Same applies during PS1’s after-school programs and Saturday Programs

All electronic devices (e.g.cell phones) may not be turned on or used on school property including school yard,excluding the designated areas indicated below.

All electronic devices (e.g.cell phones) may not be turned on or used during instruction time, except for instructional and educational purposes with the explicit approval of the teacher.

All electronic devices (e.g.cell phones) may be used during the afterschool program under the supervision of the after-school supervisor or principal.

Confiscation and Return of Electronic Items Protocol

  • If a student has any electronic devices (e.g.cell phones) on during instruction they will receive a verbal warning.
  • If student continues to leave any electronic devices (e.g.cell phones) on, the teacher will confiscate item and return to the parent at the end of the school day. A conference will then be held with the parent.
  • If student texts or records during instructional time without teachers permission, the teacher will inform administration and the privilege of bringing the item to school will be revoked.
  • If student uses the item in any inappropriate manner (e.g. taking pictures in the bathroom, texting profanities, etc.) the item will be removed and privileges of the item will be revoked and student may be subject to citywide standards of intervention and Disciplinary measures.
  • If student uses any electronic device during a fire drill or other emergency preparedness exercise the item will be removed and privileges of the item will be revoked and student may be subject to citywide standards of intervention and Disciplinary measures.
  • If student uses any electronic device during the administration of any school, quiz test or examination the item will be removed and privileges of the item will be revoked and student may be subject to citywide standards of intervention and Disciplinary measures.

Students who choose to bring cell phones, computing devices, and portable music entertainment systems to school are fully responsible for that device/system.

P.S.1K is not liable for lost, stolen or damaged cell phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems.
